The Best Shopify Apps For Product-Based Businesses (And Why)
Last updated: March 13, 2026
Running a product-based business on Shopify can feel like a balancing act. You want to provide the best shopping experience for your customers, increase your average order value, and streamline operations, but the number of apps available can feel overwhelming.
From upsells to personalization to loyalty programs, there’s a Shopify app for almost everything. But the key is knowing which apps actually add value and which ones may just add unnecessary complexity!
In this blog post, I’m breaking down the best Shopify apps that I recommend for product-based businesses, why they matter, and how to think about app selection with a “less is more” mindset!
What Are Shopify Apps and Why Do I Need Them?
Before digging into the actual apps that I recommend, I want to briefly cover what Shopify apps even are and why you need them when running a product-based business with Shopify POS.
Put simply, Shopify apps are add-ons that extend the functionality of your Shopify store. They allow you to add features that Shopify doesn’t natively include.
These add-ons range from product personalization and advanced search filters to loyalty programs, reviews, email marketing automation, and more.
Adding certain apps to your Shopify store can improve customer experience, increase average order value (AOV), simplify operational workflows, and integrate with your marketing and email strategies.
While Shopify apps can be incredibly useful, there’s just one small catch that you need to be aware of: every app you add also adds code to your website.
This means that too many unnecessary apps can slow your site, create conflicts between features, and give outside developers access to your store, which is something you always want to control carefully.
That’s why as a Shopify website designer, I emphasize a “less is more” philosophy with my clients.
Here’s what I mean by that: it’s tempting to add apps for every small feature you think your Shopify store “needs.”
But as mentioned above, every Shopify app adds code to your website, which can slow your site, create conflicts, or give outside developers access to sensitive store data.
My philosophy is to add apps intentionally, focus on high-impact features, and lean on professional guidance for custom solutions!
Often, a few well-chosen Shopify apps combined with theme-level customization gives you more flexibility and better performance than a dozen overlapping apps.
How To Know Which Shopify Apps You Need
Sooo, how can you know which apps you really need for your store? Before adding any app, I encourage you to ask yourself:
1- What problem am I solving?
Before adding any app to your Shopify store, it’s important to identify pain points and clearly define what problem the app might solve. For example, this could be low AOV, complex inventory, slow workflows, or customer engagement gaps.
2- Is it truly necessary, or can this be built into my theme?
Once you have a better understanding of the problem the app will solve, think about if adding the app is truly necessary for your Shopify store.
Many apps duplicate functionality that a Shopify expert can implement directly without adding extra code!
3- Will it integrate smoothly with the rest of my store?
Next up, it’s important to think about the compatibility of all your apps combined. Some apps don’t play well together and can create bugs or slowdowns.
If you aren’t sure if certain apps are compatible, it can be wise to chat with someone who is more well-versed in the Shopify space to give you professional guidance!
4- Does it scale with my business?
Lastly, it’s best to choose Shopify apps that will grow with your business or at least won’t block your progress as you expand!
For example, if you start with a basic loyalty program app, make sure it can handle larger customer lists, tiered rewards, or integration with your email marketing platform as your business scales. Otherwise, you might outgrow it quickly and have to migrate to something new.
By answering these questions, you can narrow down your list to apps that are high-impact, efficient, and safe for your store.
Best Shopify Apps for Product-Based Businesses
If you’re still feeling stuck on which apps you might need for your store, as a Shopify website designer and as someone who has personally used the backend of Shopify for many years, I’ve learned the best Shopify apps for most product-based businesses!
Before I share this list, I ultimately want you to remember that all product-based businesses are unique and while these apps can be helpful, all of them might not be necessary for you.
This list simply aims to give you a starting point for some common Shopify solutions you might be searching for organized by functionality:
Upsells & Increasing Average Order Value
-
UpCart or Rebuy – offer smart cart upsells and product recommendations to increase AOV. These apps help guide customers to complementary products they’ll love.
-
Bundler | Easy Bundle Builder – create product bundles or “shop the look” kits that inspire customers to buy more in one transaction.
-
Search & Discovery – suggest relevant products to pair with the current item, like styled outfits or complementary home goods.
Personalization & Advanced Product Options
-
Customily – a powerful product personalizer that lets customers select custom options, text, or images for your products. Ideal for gifts, customizable accessories, and special orders.
-
APO Product Options | Globo – streamline product customization selections without bloating your site with multiple unnecessary apps.
-
Variant Swatch King – helps customers choose product variants faster using images, colors, or swatches. Works well for clothing stores or products with multiple options. (Note: this is an example of a Shopify app that you don’t NEED if you’re working with someone who knows what they are doing and can bring this all to life within your Shopify theme!)
Customer Engagement & Retention
-
Stoq | Notify Me! – automate back-in-stock notifications and wishlist alerts so your customers never miss a product they want.
-
GiftReggie | Giftlab – create registries, wishlists, and gifting options that integrate with POS and online shopping.
-
Smile – loyalty and rewards programs that give customers incentives to return and engage with your brand.
-
UpPromote – run an affiliate program to encourage partners to promote your store. Track sales, manage payouts, and grow reach.
-
Judge.me – simplify your review process by automating requests for product or overall shop reviews after a purchase. This app makes it easy to collect feedback and showcase social proof, helping boost customer trust and future sales.
Email & SMS Marketing
-
Klaviyo – a robust platform for behavioral data-driven email and SMS marketing. Ideal for product-based businesses focused on retention and segmentation. (P.S. Need help setting up and consistently using Klaviyo for your product-based business? That’s my jam! CLICK HERE to learn more.)
-
Shopify Messaging – a simpler alternative for sending basic automations and campaigns, useful for businesses just starting with marketing automation.
Product Discovery & Navigation
-
Search & Discovery (Filters) – build advanced search and filter options so customers can quickly find the products they’re looking for.
-
TabsStudio – organize product pages with clean tabs for details, sizing, descriptions, and FAQs. Reduces clutter and improves UX. (Note: You don’t necessarily need an app for this. If you work with an experienced Shopify website designer or have a solid understanding of Shopify metafields, you can set up and configure tabs directly in your product templates. That way, your customers can view organized product details without relying on an additional app!)
-
EX Show Variants on Collection – display sibling products or variants directly on collection pages so customers can easily see all options. Some themes include this natively, but it’s typically only available at Shopify Plus levels!
Inventory & Reporting
-
CTS Multi Label Barcodes – advanced barcode management for more complex inventory needs (like Zebra printers) beyond Shopify’s native options.
-
Stocky – inventory management for retailers (Note: Stocky is sunsetting in August 2026; check back for my updated recommended replacements).
-
Better Reports – create custom reports beyond Shopify’s built-in dashboards for smarter inventory and sales decisions.
-
Matrixify – bulk import, export, and update product and store data efficiently.
-
Ablestar Bulk Editor – quickly edit multiple products in one workflow, saving time on inventory management.
SEO & Marketing Optimization
-
Booster SEO & Image Optimizer – speed up your site with bulk image compression and let AI AutoPilot scan, detect and fix key SEO issues automatically.
-
SEOWILL: AI SEO & AI Blog Post (formerly SEOAnt) – improves store visibility by creating high-ranking content and identifying and fixing SEO issues.
-
Redo – an advanced returns app for streamlined customer returns. (Note: for simpler setups, Shopify’s self-serve returns can often be sufficient!)
Other Useful Shopify Tools
-
Instafeed – a simple, clean, and FREE way to display your Instagram feed on your Shopify website and create shoppable interactions.
-
Flow – automate workflows and integrations across your store for operational efficiency.
-
accessiBe – helps keep your site ADA compliant, protecting against legal risks.
-
Evey Events and Tickets | Servv – if you’re selling event tickets or registration on your website and you need something more robust than setting up a non-physical product on Shopify and assigning it to an events collection, these apps are both great options.
-
Theme Updater & Backups | Rewind Backups – keep your site backed up and updated safely.
-
Fonts A-Z – a free and easy way to install custom fonts and assign font styles to specific elements across your website. (Note: A huge pro of working with a Shopify website designer is that we can handle this for you without needing an app! While it’s possible to DIY, there’s a bit of coding involved on both the back and front end to make custom fonts display consistently throughout your site, not just in select sections. Working with a pro ensures your fonts look perfect everywhere and keeps your website clean and efficient!)

Each of these apps have been chosen intentionally depending on the store's needs to enhance the customer experience, increase conversions, and support backend efficiency.
