3 Key Components for a Strong Website

When was the last time you gave your website some love?

Regardless of where you’re at in the process of deciding how to give your website a fresh update, you need to ask yourself if your website is working for you + your customers (meaning that they keep coming back for more.) Whether you really don’t know where to start, quickly threw something together or are thinking it’s time to dive in and give it a fresh new look, there are a few things that your site MUST have to help it succeed!

UNIQUE BRANDING

Your branding is the ONE thing that needs to pop! It’s so so SO important that your customers know why they should choose to shop with YOU instead of another store. Sharing your story and your mission is one thing you can’t be shy about!

A couple things to ask yourself when evaluating your current brand:

  1. Does your brand have a personality or is it falling a little flat?

  2. Are you using unique original content to help tell your clients your brand story or do you find stock photos?

  3. Think about your brand colors/fonts/textures - Are they infused into your current site + email flow?

Your brand needs to be infused throughout your client’s entire journey - start to finish. Pay close attention to every detail from the first time they discover you to your final thank you email.

A STRONG THEME + LAYOUT

Shopify & Squarespace are my forte! I LOVE the platform and it’s features for e-commerce businesses. Choosing a very user-friendly + high functioning website theme will complement your brand that pops! While the idea of choosing a theme can seem like an easy concept, it can be hard to visualize. It’s important that you take your time to explore the themes and their layouts to see how they function.

EASY TO NAVIGATE MENUS

Simplifying your menus and collections are key! You do not want a client to come to your site and discover an overly cluttered menu or all of your products housed in too few categories either. My recommendation is to keep it around 3-6 main categories on your actual menu and then have your sub-categories in the drop down menus below those main categories.

Think about 3-6 main categories and whether or not those main categories need sub-categories. Once you have your categories and collections finalized, you need to build your new menu (or adjust your old). It is best to set up your collections to be automatic, based on tag, with the rule added to each collection: ‘inventory must be greater than 0.’ This rule will ensure that out of stock items do not appear on your collection pages + helps to eliminate clutter.

Last but not least, make sure that you have an ‘About’ page on your menu. This can be as simple as a link to your about page or it could include a drop-down menu that includes a contact us page, a shipping & returns page, or a ‘meet the team’ page.
