Do I Need Brand Fonts? YES!

Let’s talk about fonts for logos and branding. In your head right now, without Google, could you mentally picture the font used by Anthropology in the logos + marketing? Facebook? Ford? Target?

In the graphic design world fonts can also be known as typefaces and they are a central piece to the visual identify of your brand. Your brand awareness and credibility will drastically increase by choosing 2-3 brand fonts that you can use across all of your designs.

Using a typeface collection (like the one pictured below) in logos, marketing materials, social media posts, and on your website will help to maintain your brands style and personality! It’s important that you choose fonts that YOU love and that reflect the style of YOUR brand!

If your want your brand to be known for luxury + formality, choose a clean serif font paired with a more formal script. If your vibe is more modern or eclectic, choose a fun brush script font and pair it with a simple sans serif.

3 ACTION STEPS

A few things you should know about implementing a typeface collection into your brand:

  1. Be sure to research the rights you have to use a particular font. Some fonts are labeled for personal use only and in order to use them legally, will need to be purchased. If you’d like to purchase rights to fonts, I recommend Creative Market or MyFonts. 

  2. Similar to a color palette, it’s important to save your Typeface Collection somewhere you can easily access it. Create a quick Word Doc with the font names or add it on to the bottom of your color palette Canva Doc for an easy + quick reference.

  3. Always choose fonts that are legible. Even though those fun + flowy script fonts can be appealing, what’s the point of a font if you can’t read it? I recommend using mostly serif or sans serif fonts and only using script fonts for LARGE heading-sized text that can be easily read OR for copy that is clever/cute but not the most important part of the page (i.e. no big deal if no one ever reads it…).
